In December 2001, RIGHTWriters achieved certification from the National Women Business Owners Corporation (NWBOC) as a woman-owned business. Over 200 large corporations and government agencies recognize the NWBOC certification, and many require the certification to be included in their supplier diversity programs.

"We are excited about the opportunity this certification brings us," said RIGHTWriters president, Terri Germann, who started the company in 1994. "We know that we still have to earn the business by providing valuable writing services, but the certification can provide another avenue into some of these larger corporations."

Officials responsible for NWBOC certification in Georgia informed RIGHTWriters that their application was one of the best they had seen. Nancy Staton, Director of Georgia Women Entrepreneurs (GWEN), an initiative of the Small Business Development Center at the University of Georgia, participated in the review of the RIGHTWriters application. "RIGHTWriters' application was excellent," she said. "It was complete and well organized, and it communicated the correct information so the reviewers did not have to deliberate on what the owner intended."

"We received so much positive feedback about our application, that we thought perhaps we could help other women who want to apply for certification," said Germann. RIGHTWriters now offers a consulting service to help women business owners and women entrepreneurs to expedite the certification process.

"The application process was a bit overwhelming at first," said Toni Draper, RIGHTWriters' administrator, who handled the application process. "We had to do a lot of work up front to get our paperwork in order, but that made a big difference when it came time to complete and submit the application," Draper said.

"For a small company or entrepreneur who doesn't have a capable administrator, the certification process might take a lot of valuable time away from running the business," said Germann. "We thought that we can come alongside these other women and help them get the certification done quickly and efficiently."

Germann said, "The process Toni used to organize our paperwork and complete the application saved me hours of frustration. And I think the level of quality and attention to detail we bring to all of our projects can benefit these other business owners as well."

Nancy Staton, of the SBDC, said, "In Georgia, the average time (for an application to be processed) is 30-45 days, if the package is complete and organized. It may take much longer if NWBOC has to ask for more information when a package is not complete."

NWBOC (www.nwboc.org) is a sister organization to the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). It launched its certification program as an alternative to the multiple state and local certifications required by many public and private sector agencies.
